Learn Vocal Distortions

From the subtle rasp of Indie Pop to the heavy growls of Death Metal. Master the biomechanics of vocal distortion safely with a certified Vocal Health First Aider.

Add Colour To Your Voice

Distortion isn't just for heavy metal. It’s the texture, emotion, and grit behind your favourite modern genres. Whether you sing pop, rock, blues, punk, or grunge, vocal distortion is the key to unlocking an infinite palette of tone, nuance, and power. These primal sounds predate speech itself. Mastering them allows you to bypass words and connect on a raw, deeply human level with your audience, making your voice truly unforgettable.

How It Actually Works: The Science of Safe Distortion

How does vocal distortion actually work? It all comes down to reshaping your vocal tract and modifying how your voice vibrates. While some extreme effects, like rasp, activate the structures above your true vocal folds (such as the false vocal folds), others, like vocal fry and grunting, involve engaging your true vocal folds in specific ways.

Because these sounds require precise physical coordination, trying to figure them out alone can put unnecessary strain on your voice. My goal is to take the guesswork out of the process, teaching you the exact mechanics to achieve these tones safely and sustainably.

Not a Scream

The key to healthy distortions is volume control. A distortion shouldn't be much louder than your usual singing voice. It looks brutal but it shouldn't feel like an actual scream!

Built Progressively

We are teaching your body to use muscles in entirely new ways, while also training your ears to hear unusual frequencies. Building this new muscle memory takes time to settle in, so learning to enjoy the process is key.

A Vocal Effect

Vocal distortions are layered on top of your clean singing voice. They require a solid grasp of fundamentals like airflow control, registers, and resonance. Chaotic sounds can only be made from a place of stability!
